Well it's late in the summer now, only a couple more weeks until September and then back to school. I'll be starting Class 5 at Animation Mentor, which means "Advanced Acting". I have learn a ton about animation since I started this process 2 years ago and I've hardly been doing nothing since class ended in June. But if I'm being honest with myself (and why wouldn't I be in a random public blog) I've slowed down a bit to enjoy summer.
Anyhow, right now I'm working on a pantomime piece. I was really happy with how my first one turned out, and I thought for practice I should work on another one this summer. I've worked out my planning, shot a bunch of video reference and now I'm into my second pass of blocking. On top of that I'm rereading "Animator's Survival Kit" for the 3rd time. (Note to aspiring animators -- it's really all in there)
So what's been the highlight of my summer? Well two things come to mind. First was SDCC or as the cool kids call it, "San Diego Comic Con". Last month I flew out to San Diego and met up with one my oldest friends from College and got to experience the craziness that is Comic Con. It was my first time back in about 10 years and it was way bigger and crazier than I ever remembered it. The Gaslight District was a blast and I spent way too much money on random junk. Let's hope it doesn't take me another ten years before I get to go back again.
The other great thing that happened recently was finally getting to see one of my favorite bands from college, "The Lemonheads" play a tiny club show in Milford recently. For me there is nothing like seeing a band up close, which is why small clubs are always the best way to experience any live music. The dritier and darker the better. Plus, being up close to the stage in small club, drinking beer, dancing around to a band you love is just about the best time I can think of. So when I heard The Lemonheads were playing a show in a bar 20 mins away I honestly thought it was a mistake. But luckily when I stepped in the room that night and saw the lead singer Evan Dando take the stage I knew it wasn't. Anyhow, the point is this seeing a band you love in a small club like this is probably the closest thing I'll ever come to actual time travel because in some ways it is. Your reliving a moment in time when they were new and just starting out and you were young enough to not be jaded about everything. It felt amazing.
Well luckily I still have a few more fun events planned before school starts again. Which I'm happy to say is the reason I took needed to take a break in the first place. And as they say, you can't draw from your life experiences until you have some!
More soon.
